One of the most important decisions you will make in your Direct Selling / Network Marketing Career will be the company you choose to work with. Although success in Direct Selling will depend on the right mix of company, products, compensation plan as well as your Sponsor/ Leader, it is of utmost importance to select the right company. Unfortunately, most direct sellers/network marketers let the company select them as a matter of chance. They join the first opportunity that’s presented to them.

I do not suggest that one must never choose their first option. If you are presented with an opportunity by someone you know and trust, and if you know that they will be committed to working with you till you achieve the desired success, then you must consider it seriously.

I also do not suggest that you search the Top 10 Direct Selling companies, or spend years in researching the huge list of Direct Selling/Network Marketing/MLM companies to narrow down on the right one. Over-analysis always leads to paralysis. Not only will you lose the opportunity, but it will also leave a bitter or a negative experience.

But I definitely suggest you go through the checklist I have compiled over the years of my experience with a positive frame of mind. If the company fulfills the 5 parameters, given below, it will be greatly instrumental in your chances for success.

The promoters of Company must have a stable track record of 5 years

Over the past 25 years, much Direct Selling/ Network Marketing Companies have come and gone. The truth is that most of these new companies will go out of business within 2 years, just like any other traditional business.
This is because of two reasons,

  • lack of a financial back-up
  • lack of experience and knowledge
Working in a new company will bring in additional challenges for a Direct Seller to set up his business. He would also have to undertake the risk of failure of the business, thus wasting his time and efforts. Hence, it is very important to make sure that the company has been around for at least 5 years.

The profile of the Management Team of the Company must be rich and promising

The right management team can expedite the company’s growth and efficiency. Hence it is necessary to know the qualification and the experience of the Company Management who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company, its products and other support systems like customer care, etc. The profile of the management team can help you judge the future of the company. A fast-growing company is the result of a management that is visionary as well as competent.

The products must be of vast range and superior quality

This is the cornerstone of success for any Direct Marketing Company, as good product quality translates to end-user satisfaction. Therefore, the company you choose must have:

  1. a vast range of quality consumer products and services
  2. competitive pricing structure
  3. easy availability of its products through a network of product distribution system
It is also always advisable to select a company whose product range has repeat value, which means that the consumer would be compelled to buy the products regularly due to usage and quality.
To test whether the products are, in fact, desirable and with high demand, you can answer these two questions:
  1. if you were not involved in the business opportunity, would you buy this product or service anyway?
  2. would you buy that product or service at that price?
If the answer is YES to both, then the company is definitely a winner!

The compensation plan must be fair and simple

The compensation plan should be simple to understand and explain. It should be a proven plan with many examples of Direct sellers being able to achieve the compensation as indicated by the company in its plan and awards. It should disburse rewards commensurate with efforts and results, and should not provide any undue advantage to early joiners, bulk purchase of products, etc. The Compensation Plan must give be equal for all at any point in time

The pay-outs must be steady and promotional support must be provided too

The Company should have a good track record in respect of pay-outs, which must be given on a fixed day and date. The company should provide support to its distributors for their Business Plan Presentations. It must also provide Product and Business Development Trainings from its Business Education Support System along with Business Promotion material like product brochures, Monthly Newsletters, listing Achievements, products and business building information. The company should also hold annual conventions for felicitation and recognition of achievers

Thus, you want a company with goodwill and track record, one that you feel comfortable working with, having products that you not only get excited about, but also trust. At the same time, you want a company with an unlimited compensation plan that is simple to understand and explain and the one which will train you, support you and reward you for your efforts, thus making easy for you to carry out your business. A company where you can foresee a business that will continue to grow forever.

Finding a Direct Selling/ Network Marketing Company which fulfils the above parameters can sky-rocket your growth trajectory over a short period of time and make you prosper in the life that you envision for yourself.
